Philadelphia has been a center for art and science since the eighteenth century. Its art and medical schools have been engines of innovation and the expansion of knowledge for nearly three centuries. Team curated by PAFA’s curators of historical, modern, and contemporary art, Anatomy/Academy will be the first exhibition to focus on how Philadelphia’s dynamic art and science communities, and in particular the curriculum of the Pennsylvania Academy, fostered knowledge of the human body.

is an annual event on the banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. By invitation, some 40 artists from all over spend a few days in June interpreting the river and the city in all different media. The public benefits from this sprawling outdoor spectacle, a gallery-in-the-works. The Art in the Open concept is not unique to Philadelphia — there are AIO events internationally, but the Schuylkill River is a uniquely famous waterway, especially for rowing.
