Sketching boats in drydock. This approximates an underwater view since commanding, massive hulls and teardrop keels are revealed in a way you would not ordinarily see from the surface. Impressive sweeping lines, soaring and diminishing curves. Speed and streamlining above, weight and stability below.
At this time of year, with its roiling gray skies and cold, slate gray seas, thousands of moored boats hastily exit the harbor to find shelter in sheds or on cradles in the back yard. Taut tarps cacoon entire crafts with a few sharp projections poking the surface here and there from underneath.
A telescope mounted on a cliff provides a striking view of a solitary oncoming sailboat in the distance. On land you take these beached vessels and envision them in full sail at full tilt. Earlier in the season these same boats were pounding, piercing and riding the waves, catching the wind in a most felicitous way.
