We launched early this mild Fall morning. The river was teeming with singles, doubles, quads and eights. It was Race Day.

Bridge arches framed what appeared to be misted layers of a Chinese landscape painting. Suddenly, an apparition, an American flag draped ceremoniously from a steel bridge in its trajectory over the race course. Stars and stripes were muted in tone but the flag loomed huge in the gray distance — unexpected, out of scale and quietly impressive.
